Thorton’s “The Magazine” + Multidiciplinary Publications
In her Chapter titles “The Magazine,” Thorton discusses the magazine Artforum and describes it on page 145 as “a trade magazine with crossover cachet…” In saying this Thorton is alluding to the fact that the magazine attracts a cross-disciplinary audience. In the field of architecture there are numerous publications, such as Architectural Record, which tends to be one of the more serious and architecturally focused publications. In the past couple of decades some architectural publications have expanded their scope, engaging topics outside but tangental to the field such as fashion, travel, etc. It seems as though the publications took note of the broad audiences magazines could attract (as Thorton calls out). Wallpaper Magazine is one of these publications that began as a multidisciplinary magazine and has continued to expand its scope over time to include, fashion, design, and more.
