Concepts refer to phenomena that occur in nature or thought (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Concepts are used to enhance knowledge development through naming, creating, and confirming phenomena (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Concepts are only understood within the framework of the theory they are based in (McEwen & Wills, 2019). A concept that comes to mind in my area of practice is health promotion. Being a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), I am continuously trying to emphasize health promotion to enhance patient well-being. Psychiatric patients often have medical problems that come before their mental health problems or secondary to their mental illness. Inequality in physical health in people living with mental illness compared to the general population is a significant concern (Nakanishi et al., 2019). My goal is to improve the patients overall access to health services and compliance with those health services through health promotion.

Concept analysis is a means of identifying the characteristics and attributes of ill-defined concepts to clarify those concepts (Cronin et al., 2010). My concept analysis falls into both the evolutionary method and the simultaneous method. The evolutionary method postulates that the concept has developed over time in different settings (Gray et al., 2017). Rodgers introduced this method in 2000, and the goal of this method is to find a beginning point for continued exploration (Cottrell, 2016). The concept of health promotion has developed over the past and continues to develop as science develops. Health promotion also means different things in different settings. The simultaneous analysis method suggests that closely related concepts should be distinguished to their unique meanings and areas of overlap (Gray et al., 2017). In my setting, at this time, health promotion, to me, means promoting my patients optimal health by guiding them to the resources needed to meet their health goals both physically and mentally. Each patient will have a different meaning of health and different goals, which means that my health promotion concept may change based on those individual needs. It is imperative to understand that health promotion is a fluid term that can flex to meet each patients and practitioners needs.

Physical inactivity, chronic illnesses, and unhealthy behaviors are associated with adverse health consequences, and interventions can be broken down into population-based interventions to target high-risk groups (Marcus-Varwijk et al., 2020). Psychiatric patients often have underlying chronic illnesses that lead to poor mental health, poor mental health that leads to an inability to care for themselves physically, or medication-induced metabolic disturbances. Therefore, nurses must help promote the overall health of these patients through thorough health promotion.
