Case Study
Leslie is a 15-year-old Hispanic female. Her biological mother is from northern Mexico and her stepfather is from South America. Leslie and her mother speak English well; however, both identify Spanish as their primary language at home. Leslies stepfather does not speak English. Leslie was recently suspended from school due to what the school believes is a substance abuse problem. Leslie tells you that she went to school one day, and during the lunch break, she and a group of friends left the campus and had a few drinks. The school report states that Leslie was unable to make coherent sentences, and that she became volatile when a teacher confronted her after smelling the alcohol and seeing her stumble up the hallway. Leslie states that she only drank two beers and it wasnt a big deal. Leslies mother tells you that her ex-husband, Leslies biological father, was physically abusive to both her and her children. She divorced him seven years ago, and he moved back to, and is currently in, Mexico. Leslie does not talk about her father, but her mother identifies that Leslie is the eldest of her two children, and she knows that her daughter is protective of her eight-year-old brother. At home, Leslie does not seem to demonstrate a lot of negative behaviors other than occasionally arguing with her stepdad, whom she refers to as annoying in sessions.
