Self-Awareness
Self-Awareness is the ability to understand our own emotions. Understanding our emotions and the effects we have on others will help us become better individuals and leaders. Self-awareness gives you the ability to know why you are feeling the way you are and having the aptitude to deal with it in a healthy quick manner. The key is to understand how your emotions affect others that you interact with. The more you understand yourself, the more you will have a sense of your strengths and limitations. (Vigoda-Gadot and Meisler, 2010), Emotionally intelligent individuals are more self-aware concerning their strong points and weaknesses, providing benefits to organizations aiming to acquire competitive advantage via flexibility, swift reaction and change innovation. Companies are often looking for people who are emotionally intelligent and have a strong sense of self-awareness. Take for example a boss who is stubborn, abrasive, and set in his ways. Emotions like this can be very difficult to work with. The environment that a boss like this is building could cause others to shut down and struggle to excel. If this boss is not aware of how he is coming across to his employees, it could be detrimental to the company. We must all have self-awareness, acknowledge the areas that need work and adjust. No one is perfect, we all have areas we can improve. Showing a high level of self-awareness can lead you to many more possibilities in your career.
