The causes and effects of plagiarism at the university level can be detrimental for the student if not taken seriously. Plagiarism can be defined as taking anothers work and using as their own without siting the source. If this occurs, the student will receive a grade of zero for any assignment turned in that is determined to show signs of plagiarism. Then the student should submit another submission of the assignment making the required corrections, but the resubmission will receive a reduced grade. It is the responsibility of the student to respect the honor code and abide by it, but there are ways for the student to prove their innocence if they feel they were incorrectly accused of plagiarism. An instructor might determine that the student should receive a failing grade for the entire class, but the student does have a right to a hearing and an appeal, if needed.
The student can take steps in order to avoid plagiarism. They can request instruction from the teacher on how to correctly site a source on an assignment. The student also has the right to paraphrase. Sometimes plagiarism can be intentional or unintentional, and this is why there are sources to help, like Turnitin. Turnitin helps prevent plagiarism. It allows a student to submit a paper and it will determine the mistakes with citation or the inappropriate similarities. By using this option, the student will be able to correct the mistakes prior to submitting an assignment to avoid any signs of plagiarism.

Plagiarism at the university level has the potential to severely impact the accessibility of obtaining higher education.
Many students are enrolled in higher education courses through an online learning environment. This is a popular method for obtaining college credits because it is often done at the students own pace. It is much more convenient for a student to complete classes around a work and family schedule, as opposed to the structure of in-person classes. The accessibility of plagiarizing in an online environment is much higher than that of a structured classroom because those lacking integrity now have the ability to retrieve information from multiple sources, and could submit it as their own work. When work is plagiarized, those plagiarizing, if not caught, are obtaining credit and ultimately degrees or certificates which they have not earned. This is disrespectful to those who actually put in the work to achieve the credits.
If plagiarism is discovered or suspected, universities may try to determine if the plagiarism was intentional or unintentional. Unintentional plagiarism, while serious, may be as simple as a student failing to cite one of his or her sources in a research paper. To combat this, Universities may opt to require students to attend classes in person. Universities may require the purchase of additional software or cameras to monitor students who are engaged in their studies. Aspiring students may not have the financial resources to meet this requirement, and as such, may not have an opportunity to seek higher education.
If the student does not have access to an online learning platform as a result of plagiarism at that particular school, he or she may not pursue higher education.

What are the Cause and Effects of Plagiarism at the University Level?
Many people think of plagiarism as copying another’s work or borrowing someone else’s original ideas. But terms like “copying” and “borrowing” can disguise the seriousness of the offense. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to “plagiarize” means to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own, to use (another’s production) without crediting the source, to commit literary theft, as well as to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source. In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward.
Students will tend to use plagiarism for a few reasons, including:a desire to get a good grade, lack of time, lack of interest, believing they will not get caught, and not understanding what constitutes plagiarism.
AsManonthelamstates in their article about theCauses and Effects of Plagiarism in US Universities,Students might think that plagiarism will not affect them, just their grades. Well that is not the case.Firstly, it affects the reputation of a student. Plagiarism allegations are serious, and you can get suspended or even expelled because of that. Even if you remain in college after such an ethics offense, your grades will be lower due to that, and you may fail your course as well. Plagiarism may affect the credibility of the university, as well. If the word comes out that the students who study at some university submit plagiarized works, then this university can lose its reputation. A bad reputation of students alma mater can prevent them from being hired for jobs and internships.
Constant use of work written by other people will prevent a student from learning. If he/she submits work without studying the subject or doing research, he/she will obviously learn nothing. The plagiarism also adds to the loss of critical thinking ability. A student just gets used to taking the information he/she found as the absolute truth and stops thinking critically. And that can also contribute to poor academic performance.
Plagiarism is illegal and may bring a lot of trouble for you. It is not worth it, no matter how sure you are in the fact that no one will catch you. They will; the question is when. It is essential to know what constitutes plagiarism and how it can be
avoided
in essay writing. Stealing someones work can harm your reputation, ruin the respect you managed to gain, and can even harm your career in the future.
