Task Force Assignment 1
In class today (9/9) we talked about how each member of the Williams family experienced COVID-19. If you incorporated BIGGEMS into your take of their experience, as a group, what would you say should be included in how they experienced this disease?
In other words, consider what the family members did to contract the disease in the first place, how their experiences with the virus differed, where changes could and perhaps should have been made.
How long should this be? Write until you are done. Dont add any fluff. If you get information from somewhere legit, cite it (APA only). This is due Sunday 9/13 at 11:59 PM. Again, dont do this alone, but with your group!
1. From what you know about the clinical course of COVID-19 and the immune response, how would you explain what happened to George? Issues to include in discussion:
Course of COVID-19 with mild initial symptoms followed by possible complications in second week
Cytokine storm syndrome
Heart complications
Kidney complications
Blood clots/pulmonary emboli
Immune suppression and poorly controlled diabetes
2. From what you know about the clinical course of COVID-19 and the immune response, how would you explain what happened to John? Issues to include in discussion:
Clinical pyramid and frequency of asymptomatic and mild clinical symptoms
Transmission despite asymptomatic or mild clinical symptoms
Loss of smell can present, as can loss of taste. These symptoms are relatively common and relatively unique to COVID-19.
Very difficult to distinguish from influenza and the common cold
3. From what you know about the clinical course of COVID-19 and the immune response, how would you explain what happened to Emma? Issues to include in discussion:
Gastrointestinal symptoms may be an early sign. Fever in elderly may be low grade or absent.
Pneumonia is the most common complication of COVID-19.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is likely the complication experienced by Emma. ARDS has a high mortality rate, even with ventilator support.
ARDS often results in permanent lung damage, causing chronic shortness of breath.
4. From what you know about the clinical course of COVID-19 and the immune response, how would you explain what happened to Sarah? Issues to include in the discussion:
Pregnant women may develop COVID-19 and experience the same clinical course as others. The most common presentation in pregnant women is mild or no symptoms but complications do occur.
SARS-CoV-2 may rarely cross the placenta and infect the unborn child.
Women can transmit SARS-CoV-2 to their infant through close contact.
5. What issues should be considered in the care and feeding of Sam? Issues to include in the discussion: Infants with COVID-19 generally do well.
Infants develop pneumonia and other complications of COVID-19 more frequently than older children. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome of children (MIS-C) can occur in infants but is more likely in older children.
Transmission through breast milk is thought to be rare, but transmission can occur through close contact.
Recommendations are for case-by-case decision making, including the mother in the process of shared decision making. The benefits of breastfeeding as well as the potential harms need to be taken into account.
