Research the topic (text, other materials) and briefly describe so that your classmates get a better understanding of the issue.
Find a current event that illustrates the concept.
Example: The managerial function of “Planning” can illustrated by the strategic plan. Find a current example of how managers are dealing with the COVID19 pandemic from a strategic perspective. (Example: HEB has done an amazing job of being agile, customer-service oriented, and consistent. How did HEB executives and business unit managers deal with this extremely disruptive, unexpected circumstance?)

The Importance of Innovation
Innovation:
The process of taking a creative idea and turning it into a useful product, service, or method of operation.
The creation of new services, products, and procedures allows companies to create new avenues for profit and to cut costs by eliminating less efficient protocols.
Failure to innovate can have dire consequences for companies, as cable and satellite television shows us.
Two Types of Innovation
Disruptive Innovation
Innovations in products, services, or processes that radically change an industrys rules of the game.
The 1957 advent of the microchip by Jack Kilby.
Sustaining Innovation
Innovations that represent small and incremental changes in established products rather than dramatic breakthroughs.
Products as a service and generational technology like the iPhone.
H-E-B and Sustaining Innovation
In February of 2018, H-E-B claimed Favor as a subsidiary company, expanding its delivery services.
In September of 2018, H-E-B commenced the construction of a technology center in Austin.
Throughout 2018 and 2019, H-E-B vastly expanded its curbside and delivery with the introduction of new fulfillment centers and a new deliver fleet headquarters.
These incremental developments taken together allowed H-E-B to take advantage of its digital and personal shopping infrastructures to turn social distancing mandates into a profitable benefit.
H-E-B shows perfectly why maintaining a process of incremental innovations can pay off even years down the line. Over the last decade, the company has invested in novel technological and customer service solutions. These innovations allowed H-E-B to emerge better off in the wake of the dramatic changes COVID-19 has forced onto the market.
Questions to think about:
1. What are some of the common traits (in policy and culture) companies who failed to innovate share?
2. How can we as managers recognize the need to innovate, and how do we encourage innovation in our companies?
3. When can attempts to innovate be considered a bad thing and how do we avoid these pitfalls when we innovate?
