1. In American political culture, expectations focus on rules and procedures rather than results. Compare and contrast the individualistic nature of American politics with the collectivist viewpoint found in other countries. Discuss how the American focus on rules and procedures affects the definitions of American core values and what is expected of government. What are those American core values anyway?
2. Immigration has always been a major issue in the United States not just at this moment in history. What are the basic legal definitions and policy positions of for and against immigration? What problems and benefits do undocumented immigrants pose for local communities? Historically, how has the U.S. attempted to restrict immigration? What have been the popular conceptions of immigrants in this country? Has this evolved and in what ways?
3. On the face of it, freedom of religion seems to be a relatively easy concept to understand. In reality, it is fairly complex. Describe the establishment clause and the free exercise clause. What is their relationship and what is their intent? Why are they clearly juxtaposed within the same Amendment to the Constitution? Why has each been so controversial? What has the Supreme Court ultimately ruled regarding these two clauses? Give examples where necessary.
4. Americans are deeply divided over the right to privacy. Almost all Americans believe in the right to some privacy, but there is little agreement regarding what should be private and what can be regulated. Why is there so much disagreement over the right to privacy? What does a right to privacy even mean? What ancillary and related political and policy issues does a robust or restricted right to privacy impact? Why is the issue so heated? Is it simply a matter of privacy?
5. People suspected of committing a crime in the United States are afforded certain rights such as protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, protection against self-incrimination, the right to counsel, and protection against cruel and unusual punishment. Discuss the role of the Supreme Court in the interpretation and enforcement of ALL of these individual rights.
