Paper #1 – Exploratory Essay
My topic is Technology
Formatting for Exploratory Essay:
1. Essay should be double spaced;two to three pagesin length. (I prefer 2)
2. Correct headingshould be placed in the top left-hand corner and title of paper should be centered above text.
3. Your last name and page number should be in top right corner of succeeding pages including WorksCited page, as: Maples 2
4. Works Cited page is a separate page at close of paper; however source material forthisessay is not required, but is always allowed.
5. If you refer to a source in your paper that is in your annotated bibliography, be sure to include in your Works Cited page.
6. All citation should be in MLA format
7. ALWAYS know that anything quoted must be in quotation marks, and the safest practice is to follow each quote with an in-text citation.
8. All papers, including any homework papers, must have a complete and proper heading as shown on page 35 in POA
9. All work must be in MLA format.
FATAL FLAWS for Academic Papers or “Things to Avoid.” Be sure to pay close attention to this list! There is a reason it is titled “Fatal Flaws.”
1. Do not usecontractions (don’t, won’t, couldn’t, etc.) in academic work.
2. Avoid the use ofpersonal pronouns,especially “YOU”as in “I am sure that you understand the implications of. . .etc.”The exception to this is the use of “I” in a persuasive paper.However, a more polished approach is to write, “This writer agrees with . . .etc.”
3. Use spell check, but do not depend on it entirely. There is a difference between ‘weather’ and ‘whether’ ‘there’ and ‘their’ ‘accept’ and ‘except’ and on and on I could go!College people know the difference.
4. When referring to people, use “who,” NOT “that.”The woman who ran the Marathon was a cancer survivor.”That” is for things and groups of people. See page 468 inDBU Handbook (if you have it)for further explanation.
5. Perhaps you have noticed that often I make corrections on your Discussion Board posts. After all, this is an English class!! I expect you to take note of the correction, and avoid making the same mistake again. I can assure you that in further classes which you will take in English, grammatical errors will be strenuously graded and points will be deducted, yes, even from the Discussion Board. I am aware that often this also holds true in courses other than English.
