How regular people and how professionals view risk is very different. Professionals generally look at risk in terms of mortality rates.The general public looks at two main factors when thinking about risk; dread risk and unknown risk. These two factors encompass many more feelings and consequences than simply mortality rates andthereforethe general public associates risk with many things other than just mortality. This also mean that it is very important for professional to communicate risk clearly. This is actually one of the main tenets of risk communication; to communicate early, fully, and often. Because the general public views risk as many different things and outcomes, communicating early helps to addressa concern before it becomes bigger. It help the public know that you are being proactive and also helps make later communication easier since you have already made contact. It is important to communicate often so that people are reassured that you are still working on assessing, fixing, or otherwise addressing the risk that has been identified. Communicatingfully is also very important because it helps build trust with the audience. Communicating the full extent of risks and information involved shows that you are not trying to hide information which can greatly increase the publics perceived risk. Overall, keeping people well informed can help prevent panic and allow for accurate portrayal of risks and information.

Risk assessment is the process used to determine a particular risk and the severity of the risk involving the health of a person or persons due to a potential hazard. The subjective severity of a risk varies between individuals and the objective severity determined by professionals. A lay person may perceive a potential risk to have a greater severity than a public health professional might perceive it. Perception is based on awareness, educational background, and cognitive interpretation. The goal of public health professionals is to protect the health of a population and the environment surrounding it. Public health professionals have to view each potential risk from a different perspective. They have to dissect studies and information to come to an unbiased conclusion of risk severity. If a lay person comes across a potential risk that directly involves themselves or a loved one, then they are likely less rational when determining the severity.
Risk communication is key between the public and public health professionals. An important factor regarding risk communication is the principles of process. This can be further broken down into the timing of communication and released information. A line of communication between the public and the professionals should be created early in the process. This allows for concerns to be expressed, new ideas to be discussed, and data to be provided. The public wants to be involved and to be heard. Public health professionals should release relevant information to the public, but need to be aware of restraints on specific details.
