Discussion 1

Morrish theory is that behavior discipline is structuring through meaningful teacher guidance. He informs that teachers should set standards that help students to understand how their conduct should be. Not all children are trained with the appropriate social skills and self control in their homes. He thinks teachers are the best candidates for teaching children discipline when they know how. He could be right. Some children learn the most priceless lessons from teachers and mentors. Some parents may was not taught displine and some parents are not around their children to teach them enough discipline because of consume work schedules and a busy life. Sometimes the teachers teaching, love, and help are the only useful direction in life that some students receive. He disagrees with todays way of disciplining. Morrish says in order to gain self control it takes time; I do believe that. I think self control and discipline has to be learned and one must have patience in developing it. He thinks that self control and self responsibility in children start when students learn through his guidance; when they are mature enough, then they will be able to partake in decision making. When I was a child in school, I do not recall students having much of choice definitely in making the rules. I do agree when he says that too much time is spent on arguing, negotiating, and bargaining with students on their behavior and to getting them to comply with authority. I know we see this lot of times in school that we will waste valuable time pleading with students especially if we are trying to give them a chance. Teacher may spend time in bargaining and negotiating with students and so do many parents. Morris guide to educators is that teachers should assist students to distinguish between whats right and whats wrong and the importance of obeying authority. To use his approach real discipline because the disciplining that is being used is not producing real results. Overall, I agree with most of what Morrish advocates.

I agree with Morrish and the ideas that he has about how students should conduct themselves in the classroom. Students are still young and they are learning in every aspect of their lives. During the ages of newborn to seventeen/eighteen, the most time that children spend is at home and in the care of their teachers or daycare provider. As teachers, we will be the ones outside of their caregivers, guardians, or parents who they will learn the most from. Not only will it be the curriculum that they will learn from the teachers, but they will also be taught behavior and how to conduct themselves.
I agree with Morrish because I do not believe that students should be given the choice on how they will or will not behave during class. This leaves too many other variables that will come into play. Such as, the disruption of the other students who may be paying attention to the activities being held during class. There are some students who will naturally act out during class because of their home life and that may be the behavior that they are accustomed to acting out. Then there are those students who will pay attention and do what the teacher has asked of them. As teachers, there cannot be a time where students are allowed to dominate the classroom by telling the teacher what they will or will not do during the class. Students are to be taught what to do and what not to do. They also should be taught what is acceptable and what is not acceptable behavior. This not only prepares them for class, but teaching them these behaviors shows them that there is structure in every aspect of their lives. Students who are allowed to what they want to do, become self-centered and selfish, and some may even think things should be done their way or no way at all. Once out of the classroom, these are the lessons that will be taken into the workforce with these students. That is not how functional and effective learning is done. There has to be an expectation of order and discipline from every student and professionalism from the teacher.

Discussion 3

According to Morrish, the blame for the ever-growing problem of discipline in schools rests at least in part on popular discipline theories, which he believes have gone to excess in allowing students to make choices concerning how they will conduct themselves in school. What are your thoughts about Morrishs ideas?

Morrish ideas are that we as educators are to set class rules and procedures in the classroom. It is the responsible of the teacher to make sure the students understand the class rules. If possible, we might have to teach them the rules to follow in our classroom. Some students may need a guide to go by because students learn things by seeing it. However, all students need to be reminded of the class rules. For example, the teacher needs to have rules posted in the classroom, in the syllabi, sent home with the parents and posted on the school website. This helps both the student and parent to remember the rules. Rules are a general Expectation. Procedures would be a daily routine that the students would do in a classroom. Its important to know the different between the two. When rules and procedures are followed this help with discipline. When the rules and procedures are established in the beginning of the year it let students know how you expect them to behave throughout the rest of the year. I do agree with Morrish idea. He believes that discipline approaches do not teach students how to behave. You have to explain to students what you expect from them and also explain the consequences that happens when they go against the rules. Rules should be taught and learned. In cooperative this lesson into God word would come from Ephesians 6:1. Children, obey your parents because in the Lord, for this is right. Students have to obey their teachers because at school we are their parents.
