Data Encryption Standards

Data Encryption Standards(DES) are a set of instructions and rules which regulate the encryption process ofdigital data. It has a short length of characters and, therefore, increases insecurity levels (Ryndel et al., 2019). This encryption mode uses a key to customize and increase the privacy of the data stored, and therefore, the data can only be accessed by the people who have the key.These standards have therefore influenced cryptography due to the advancement of triple DES.
The Data Encryption Standards were developed in 1970 at IBM and later submitted to the national bureau of standards(NBS). This was after the agency made an invitation to propose a candidate to protect sensitive data (Rehan & Nawaid, 2018). The National Bureau of standards considered these standards important since there was a need to protect sensitive information nationwide.These standards were later modified in the year 1976 to increase its strength against cryptanalysts.This version was later published in the year 1977 to for use in the united states as an official federal information processing standards(FIPS). The publication of this document led to its adoption internationally, and there was widespread academic scrutiny.
Data Encryption Standards have positively affected cryptography. This is because triple DES offers increased protection to data, and therefore it cannot be accessed easily. It offers a safer platform to store sensitive information, and it provides increased integrity and confidentiality (Ratnadewi et al., 2018). The use of DES has led to an increase in cryptography’s security levels and, therefore, transformed cryptographypositively. The increase in security levels isachieved becausetriple DES offers encryption. Each character in the triple-DES encrypts one block of 64 bits, and the middle operation is made to be the reverse of the first and last characters. This encryption mode, therefore, increases the security offered by increasing the strength of the encryption.It alsoprovides backward compatibility with DES. Therefore, the advancement of the DES to triple-DES has transformed cryptography positively.

DES or the Data Encryption Standard is the oldest cipher defined and endorsed by the US government by the year 1997. They have claimed this cipher as the official standard(Arboleda, Balaba, & Espineli, 2017). This standard of data encryption has gone through several public scrutinise and is most well-known for the usage and widely used secret key of the cryptosystem which has its commercial usage.

The algorithm of this system is used in the American National Standard Units. This cryptosystem has even attained the recognition in the international standard as well. The DES can encrypt 64 bits of the input in the plaintext into the same bits of the output cipher text. It contains the 64 bits as well as the 54 independent key which results in the exact cryptographic information(Cruz, Domingo, De Guzman, Cotiangco, & Hilario, 2017). This is highly used for the encryption purpose and engineers used the DES to use in the building block design and other useful works depending on the algorithms. Cryptographers have made development in the techniques which has boost the work of the DES.

DES was developed in the 1970s which the Triple DES is the new and the improved version of the DES. The Triple DES helps in expanding the key of the algorithm and changes it in the succession with three different keys. This is a change which has come in the new version and makes the working of the DES better(Arboleda, Balaba, & Espineli, 2017). The Triple DES make the 48 pass through it and the output key as 168 bits. It is highly difficult to implement thus a two way key option is there which make encrypt and the decrypt method work in the Triple DES. This new version thus takes the DES a step ahead.
