My name is John Marek. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a History minor from the University of New Mexico, a Bachelor of Science in Applied Math from the University of Houston Downtown with a Computer Science concentration and a Master of Science in IT from the University of Houston Clear Lake and some doctoral work at the main campus of the University of Houston. Teaching has been my privilege at Houston Community College for over thirty-one years. I was active duty in the Marine Corps for three years and five years in the Reserves, and I spent the first eighteen years of my life as a military dependent growing-up in the U.S. Air Force. From that experience, I lived on Okinawa for four years where I learned to speak Japanese. I also had the good fortune to have General Benjamin O. Davis as a next-door neighbor and talked to him when we shared a duplex house when my dad was stationed at Bolling Air force Base, Washington, D.C. in 1963. His dad was the first black general in the Army in the 1920s, and General Davis was the first black Air Force general when the U.S. Air Force was created in 1947. I did not realize until later that he is considered the founder of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black fighter pilot plane squadron in WWII, as he was the highest ranking officer at the time and that General Davis had been shooting down German fighter planes in WWI. Think Denzel Washington only taller and leaner and, yes, more handsome. Definitely a movie life. I also witnessed the March on Washington in August 1963. After I received my degree in Applied Math from the University of Houston Downtown, I worked at NASA where I actually met Eugene Krantz who is famous for his Failure is not an option quote from when Apollo 13 had an electrical switch spark ignite an oxygen tank in space on its way to the moon on April 13, 1970. I am happy to impart my knowledge to you in any way I can. Let me know how I can help you. If you are interested in learning about Binary Conversion, please let me know.
