Annotation Example
In this article, Mezirow (2003) makes a distinction between “instrumental” and “communicative” learning. “Instrumental learning” refers to those processes which measure and gauge learning, such as tests, grades, comments, quizzes, attendance records and the like. “Communicative learning,” on the other hand, refers to understanding created over time between individuals in what Mezirow calls “critical-dialectical-discourse,” (p. 59) which is a fancy way of saying, important conversation between 2 or more speakers. Another key idea Mezirow discusses is “transformative learning,” (p. 61) which changes the mind, the heart, the values and beliefs of people so that they may act better in the world. Mezirow argues that “hungry, desperate, homeless, sick, destitute, and intimidated people obviously cannot participate fully and freely in discourse” (p. 59). On the one hand, he is right: there are some people who cannot fully engage because their crisis is so long and deep, they are prevented. But, I don’t think Mezirow should make the blanket assumption that everyone in unfortunate circumstances is incapable of entering the discourse meaningfully. One thing is certain: if we gave as much attention to the non-instrumental forms of intelligence–like goodness, compassion, forgiveness, wonder, self-motivation, creativity, humor, love, and other non-measured forms of intelligence in our school curriculums, we’d see better people, actors in the world, and interested investigators than we currently have graduating high school.

Abortion

We are to conduct a debate that states that abortion is a crime. Most people have different views about abortion, and they all have reasons why they think that way. The opposing side will disagree with the motion stating that abortion is a crime, while the proposing side says that it is true that it is a crime to abort. Ethical egoism states that self-interest is an integral part of an individual. This interest in oneself might turn out to be differing from ethical egoism because exaggerated claims of an individual might be leaving no room for the part of other people. This focusses on both the positive and the negative side of ethical egoism. In this case, ethical egoism has both strengths and weaknesses, but the philosophical view will only be defined by the person(Fandes & Barzelatto, 2006).
Moral agents stand on their self-interest, and therefore, an act might be useful to the person but immoral to the eyes of the community. Ethical egoism encourages people to serve their interests exclusively. This is why different people might be having different views towards a particular topic, depending on how the matter is affecting them. In this debate, ethical egoism would take the opposing side, stating that abortion is not a crime. This is because the woman is the one who is carrying the baby, and the baby is inside her and therefore, can decide on whether to continue having the baby or terminate the pregnancy. No woman is supposed to be forced to carry a baby that they do not want. This is because no baby should be unwanted to the parents. This might, therefore, make a woman terminate her pregnancy(Farrell, 2010).
There are instances where the mother might be suffering from other diseases, where carrying the pregnancy to term might be risking the mother’s health condition. This will therefore call for the need to decide on whether to terminate the pregnancy or to endanger the womans life by trying to carry the pregnancy to term. The wise decision would be to remove the pregnancy as a safety measure on the woman’s life. This should be done in a health center by a professional who can be able to carry out the process safely. Most of the situations that women find themselves in are unavoidable, and this calls for the need for essential decisions (Fandes & Barzelatto, 2006).
Abortion might also be supported in a case when the woman might not be in a financial position to raise the child. The woman will then abort because she does not want the child to suffer on her hands, which will be painful. Most of the people who vote against abortion are men, which is because they will never be pregnant, and they will never be in a situation that women are when they are deciding between abortion. A woman might choose to abort because she is not ready to carry the pregnancy for the nine months due to either education or work. All these reasons are due to personal interest(Gurtovnik, 2008).
There is always a conflict between loyalty to self and the community. This is because society expects one to behave according to the morals of their culture. This is why the community will always be against abortion because they consider it wrong. The community suggests that no child should be unwanted, and there are alternatives to abortion, which include giving the child out for adoption immediately you give birth. Some of the people might not be in a position to give birth, and they require to adopt children. The community believes that life starts immediately after conception, and abortion is taking away someone’s life. Abortion should also not be considered a contraceptive and should be illegal in the state(Fandes & Barzelatto, 2006).
Social ethicist would be against abortion because they believe that people should live together in a community according to the agreement that establishes political and moral rules of behavior. In this case, there will be social contracts that will be expressed in terms of implicit or laws that will guide the community. The social ethicist cannot support abortion because the rules of the community do not allow it and consider it a mistake. This topic involves a collision between personal obligation and national obligations. This is because the person might be very respectful of the rules and regulations of the nation, but some circumstances might be forcing them to break them. In a case where a woman has gotten pregnant unwillingly, she might decide to abort the pregnancy because she will not be able to bring up the child(Gurtovnik, 2008).
In my view, I would not encourage abortion, but some unavoidable circumstances might make a woman think about having an abortion. I would encourage women to consider various alternatives to abortion rather than having an abortion as the very first option. Men also have a duty to take part in helping their women in decision making. Before deciding between abortion, you should first consider the advantages and disadvantages of doing it and estimate the side to which will be favorable to the person. Abortion, therefore, might not be a wrong act to an individual but might be going against the rules and regulations of the community(Farrell, 2010).
Abortion risks a woman’s life when done by a non-profession, which calls for the government to put legislation against un-experience professions who carry out the abortion. It is the responsibility of both a man and a woman to make decisions on whether to do an abortion or not. In most cases, this decision is left on to the woman to decide about whether to keep the baby or to do away with it. This is why most of them end up making wrong decisions which they might end up regretting in the near future. The community discourages abortion as a method of contraceptives, and they advise the youth to use safer methods of contraceptives. The thought of ever doing an abortion might have never hit your mind, but immediately one gets an unwanted pregnancy, it is the first thought that comes into the mind. Therefore, an individual might be considering abortion as a very awful act until they are in a state where it is one of the solutions to their problems (Gurtovnik, 2008).
There are measures that can be taken for a community which might be wanting to totally eliminate cases and causes of abortion. Some of the things they need to do is to ensure that the causes have been identified, so that the causes of the problems can be eliminated. There is also a need to teach moral lessons to boys and girls who might be on their reproductive ages, so that they can keep safe and only get pregnant when the right time has come. The major cause of unwanted pregnancy has been drug abuse, where the youths engage in immoral behavior when they are not in their right senses. After the pregnancy, the only thing the person might think of is getting rid of the pregnancy. There is also a need to teach and provide the youths with the best contraceptives to minimize the risk of getting pregnant. There are instances such as rape, which cannot be avoided. Such cases might need to be addressed by a psychology expert who will be there to assist the girl in decision making and talking to her so that she does not get into depression. Even though the community is discouraging abortion, they also have to take a step in curbing the cause of unwanted pregnancies (Fandes & Barzelatto, 2006).)
