DISCUSSION:
What does it mean to be a nurse with a practice or research doctorate? What are the expectations associated with this degree? How might this degree be different for a nurse who holds a different degree?
Doctoral programs have two different areas of study: research focused and practice focused. Practice focused are focused on advanced practice nursing. This type of specialization focuses more on evidenced research which uses the application of credible research findings and not resorting to Dr. Google. A Doctor of Philosophy degree is more research focused. This path of study focuses on research methodology and scientific content (Sperhac & Clinton, 2008).
The expectations of the degree differs in the area of study. Practice-focused programs understandably place greater emphasis on practice, and less emphasis on theory, meta-theory, research methodology, and statistics than is apparent in research-focused programs. Whereas all research focused programs require an extensive research study that is reported in a dissertation or through the development of linked research papers (Zaccagnini & White, 2017).
In comparison, this reminds me of the certification exams when I had to choose between ANCC and the AANP. The ANCC has questions that were mostly research and theory. The AANP was mostly clinical roles in the field and the disease processes. I was more intrigued by the AANP even though I had studied for both certifications.
A nurse with a different degree might run into a challenge if he/she decides to not pursue the terminal degree. The masters degree (MSN) historically has been the degree for specialized advanced nursing
practice. With development of DNP programs, this new degree will become the preferred preparation for specialty nursing practice (Sperhac & Clinton, 2008).
In my own personal experience I have encountered employers who request DNP degrees for the type of positions I was applying for. My goal one day is to teach and most of these positions require a doctorate level degree.
How do these considerations relate to your motivation to pursue a doctoral degree right now?
I choose the DNP track because my desire is to be a leader in my field. I would like to make a change in the community I serve and being able to voice my concern to make a change. As a midlevel provider I have some respect in the community but I have not encountered many leadership opportunities. For example I am able to sit at the table in some meetings but I currently do not have the knowledge base to support my ideas. Obtaining my DNP will give me the recognition I deserve. Whether it is a DNP or PH.D both terminal degrees can work together to complement each other. (Laureate Education, 2011).
