Case Study
Sarah is a 71-year-old African American female. She is a retired registered nurse and identifies that she started working in the medical field when she was 15 years old as a nurses aide. She retired when she turned 68 and admits that it has been a struggle because she does not like just sitting around the house. For the past two years, she has worked part-time as a private sitter for a family who has an ailing family member. She describes it as pretty easy work; I just go in and sit with them, make sure they get their lunch until their kids get home in the evening to take over. Its only two or three times each week. She says that taking on this position has helped with her depression because it gets her out of the house. Recently, Sarah was diagnosed with her own health issues. During her last physical, her doctor noticed a lump under one of her arms, and it was identified as cancer. Sarah states that she is going to start chemotherapy, and that she does not want to give up her part-time job. She is worried about her health and how going through chemotherapy might affect her depression. She is worried about the extent of the cancer and is not sure what her prognosis will be yet.
