Below are the questions for exam one. Please respond in paragraph form to each question.
Each paragraph response should be 250 words or half of a Google doc page. Single or double
space responses are welcome. You may write your answers on another page and upload it to
the class Gaucho Space site. If you have problems uploading your exam to the Gaucho site, as
an alternative option, email it directly to Lucas ([emailprotected] ) by 9:00 AM on
Wednesday, August 26th. Please try to upload the exam directly to Gaucho Space as it helps to
administrate a swifter and potentially less confusing grading process. Thank you for your

Each question is worth 3.5 points. Each of you is gifted a half-point for a total of 25 points
available on this exam.

Remember to cite and discuss (describe an analyze) works of art in your responses. Use
examples to illustrate your answer, and be sure to explain why the example is important –
describe and analyze the work! Visit class image lectures for large-scale photos.
1. Who was Clement Greenberg? What role did he play in the Abstract Expression movement?
2. Compare and contrast the following two works. Consider the movement of each work and
then discuss how they are similar and different.
3. Discuss the spectator’s changing role in the 1950s Avant-Garde art and 1960s Minimalism
(including Eva Hesse). Select one work from each movement to compare and contrast the
changing role of the spectator.
4. How did Faith Ringgold address gender and racism in her work? How does Ringgold’s work
compare (similar and different) from Howardena Pindells?
5. What sociopolitical purpose did the Guerilla Girls serve in the Seventies and Eighties? How
did they employ art for their purposes?
6. Compare and contrast the following two works. Consider the movement of each work and
then discuss how they are similar and different.
7. How did artists during the Eighties Art and AIDS Activism movement employ graphic design
and advertisement to convey their message? Discuss examples to support your answer.
