Think about your relationship with your manager and imagine how you would create a perfect working relationship. What would it look like? What types of input would you want or need? What would you like to better understand? What kind of support would you like? How often would you like to meet with your boss? How would you like to get information from your boss? Does it depend on what the information is?
Managers have a very important responsibility in the nature and productiveness of the relationship they have with each of their employees. As a manager, you will wear many hats when it comes to your staff and have a central role in how your staff performs, develops, and engages or commits to the organization. Your actions and words matter. Consider a time when a managers actions or words discouraged you. Perhaps your manager excluded you from a meeting where you would have had valuable input, or when a manager dismissed your ideas. Maybe you had a manager who didnt give you adequate feedback or support. Perhaps your hard work went unappreciated. No doubt this would be discouraging. Horstman (2016) explains that when you, as a manager, schedule regular time to visit with those who work for you, the message is, Youre always going to have time with me. Im always going to be investing in the relationship. A good manager notices the work and provides constructive feedback and recognition for it. A good manager will give the freedom to make decisions, and in so doing, create an empowering and nurturing environment.
