A combination of all the building blocks of nursing informatics (nursing science, information science, cognitive science, and computer science) was in place to acquire, record, process and disseminate the knowledge acquired. No wonderAmmenwerth(2019), surmised that current healthcare would have been unimaginable if there were no modern information and communication technologies.

2. Informatics play a huge role in nursing. As a matter of fact, according to an article written for the ANA, The Institute of Medicine identified informatics as one out of five essential competencies needed to ensure that patient centered care and applying quality improvement are met (Kleib 2016). Electronic health records, electronic medication administration, computerized documentation systems help to carry out health care assessments in a timely manner (2016) , especially in the case where the provider can access a clients medical record either by tablet or anywhere a computer is available which is everywhere in hospitals and the patient does not have to wait until the doctor finds the paper records, read them, and return back to the floor to provide the next step of healthcare for this patient. In the case of Tom and the elderly man, Tom was able to provide quick and efficient care when assessing his patient. As learned in nursing school he did a focused assessment on the mans chief complaint. Having the pulse oximeter on hand meant that Tom did not have to wait for labs to be drawn and sent off to assess if the O2 was critically low. His vital signs and head to toe assessment revealed that this patient could benefit from oxygen therapy. Informatics and technology overall improves patient outcomes and is directly linked to patient centered care (Kleib 2016) as evidence by Tom being able to quickly diagnose this patient.

I currently do not work in a healthcare setting but during clinical I was able to use some of my new learned knowledge to appropriately care for my patients. There was an instance where I had to give patient education to a patient that otherwise would not listen to anyone. This patient had just come out of surgery and was refusing to get up or use the incentive spirometer. Knowing that benefits of the device I was able to encourage her to test it out and to her surprise it was not as bad as she thought. I explained that this small device could save her from possible pneumonia and even more complications related to breathing. The one tool that I found helpful in the clinical setting was the electronic medication administration systems such as the pill dispenser and using bar codes to do additional checks before giving medication. This drastically reduces medical error as red flags will literally pop up alerting you to make sure that this is the correct client and making you much aware of the kind of drug it is.
