Hello class,
The significance of addressing spirituality with the elderly to determine the values and a clarification of values related to the older adults wishes concerning end-of-life care (Holosko et al., 2013). It is important to know what the older adults beliefs are concerning in the use of heroic measures to being kept alive. It is also important to explore whether the older adult has designated healthcare surrogates and whether the appropriate documents are in place to permit their wishes (Holosko et al., 2013).

Identify a spiritually based intervention for this population. Describe the effectiveness of the use of spirituality with the elderly as found in the literature.

There are many interventions that can be utilized when working with the older population. A spiritually based intervention that I have found for this population is Spiritual Intelligence-based intervention. A study was conducted on the effect of teaching spiritual intelligence principles on death anxiety among senior citizens living in retirement homes (Aref Majidi, & Omid Moradi, 2018).There were two groups that consisted of 10 subjects per group. The fear of death scale was utilized for pre-testing the subjects (Aref Majidi, & Omid Moradi, 2018).The subjects received Spiritual Intelligence-based intervention in eight 90-minute sessions (Aref Majidi, & Omid Moradi, 2018).

The results of this group showed a significant difference in post-test between the experimental group and the control group. Results indicated that educating the subjects about spiritual intelligence components reduced their death anxiety (Aref Majidi, & Omid Moradi, 2018).The intervention also reduces the death of others and dying of others dimensions in the subjects (Aref Majidi, & Omid Moradi, 2018).

Describe your own thoughts on the use of spirituality in an intervention.

My thoughts on the use of spirituality in an intervention could potentially be beneficial to those who are firm believers within their spiritual beliefs. Like any other intervention, there are going to be interventions that do not match for everyone. However, opening up a spirituality base intervention may change others perspectives in life. The client would have to be willing to consider be open-minded if they are not interested in a spirituality-based intervention.

Hello Class

Postyour explanation of the significance of addressing spirituality with the elderly.

Religion and spirituality are similar but not identical concepts. Religion is often viewed as more institutionally based, more structured, and involving more traditional activities, rituals, and practices. Spirituality refers to the intangible and immaterial and thus may be considered a more general term, not associated with a particular group or organization. In the US, > 90% of older people consider themselves religious or spiritual; about 6 to 10% are atheists and do not seek meaning through religion or a spiritual life (Kaplan, & Berkman, 2019).

Taking a spiritual history shows older patients that the health care practitioner is willing to discuss spiritual topics. Practitioners may ask patients whether their spiritual beliefs are an important part of their life, how these beliefs influence the way they take care of themselves, whether they are a part of a religious or spiritual community, and how they would like the health care practitioner to handle their spiritual needs(Kaplan, & Berkman, 2019).

Identify a spiritually-based intervention for this population.Describe the effectiveness of the use of spirituality with the elderly as found in the literature.

Psychotherapy is used to promote RSIs (Religious and Spiritual Interventions) and beliefs into the program to help cope with diseases. Ideas, like God is a source of hope, forgiveness, peace, and acceptance, Higher Power gives relief and meaning in the end-of-life, feel the connection with others through love were used as topics (Goncalves, et al, 2017). Acknowledging spirituality is important because it may influence well-being in later life and allow older adults to adjust accordingly with some aspects of growing older. Spiritual activities (e.g., prayer) can reduce feelings of isolation and the community aspect surrounding spirituality can have positive outcomes for older adults. (Malone, & Dadswell, 2018).

Describe your own thoughts on the use of spirituality in an intervention.

My personal thoughts about using spirituality in an intervention tend to lean towards it would depend on the individual and what the clients beliefs are and what they think about it. I would ask them how they feel about talking about spirituality and would they mind if we included it in our sessions. It would totally depend on how the client feels about it.
