Effective Communication Strategies
Effective Communication Strategies
Communication is the process of passing information between two or more people or parties whereby the sender encodes the message while the receiver decodes the message. Interprofessional communication occurs when health care professionals communicate with patients and their families, with other health professionals and with the community at large in a collaborative, transparent and responsible manner. This communication is essential for a person serving as a professional nurse because it helps to pass different crucial information in an understandable way. Responsible communication, on the other side, refers to communication that occurs transparently and ethically, thus improving the well-being of the society. This kind of communication for a person working as a nurse is vital to uphold the moral and ethical standards in passing the intended information. Lack of ethical consideration may distort the message being passed. Moreover, the audience may not be motivated and convinced to listen to the sender or pay attention to the message communicated.
Interdisciplinary health care team is a sensitive team because it deals with the lives of people. So, any information should be communicated well, and in an ethical and transparent manner. Maintenance and observance of ethical issues are essential for effective communication. Responsible communication ensures that a nurse acts in accordance to the values and ethics of the profession. Consequently, patients tend to receive the best services transparently from the nurse.
Examples of interprofessional communication include discussion of goals of care. Professionals in the health sector may engage in talks to discuss some objectives to guide them in the execution of their mandate. For instance, the discussion may be about how to improve patients welfare and how to enhance service delivery among goals. The healthcare professionals can also embark on the sharing of ideas and opinions to improve the efficiency and quality of the services provided to patients. This communication can result in viable insights which, when implemented, can steer forward the activities of the healthcare sector in a positive way.
The primary goal of responsible communication is to show respect and love to one another. Acting passively toward a boss is a good example. Behaving responsibly, gaining trust through honest, demonstrating environmental responsibility, and requesting people to comply with the right communication are some other examples of responsible communication. In the healthcare sector, professionals communicate responsibly to serve as a role model for other stakeholders. They communicate politely so that other people can emulate and pass the intended message well. Being honest in communication is an essential virtue for health professionals so that the information provided is accurate, reliable, and relevant for the purpose. Through that, the communication process is rendered impressive and dependable since professionals can communicate effectively without distortion of messages.
Generally, communication is a good way of passing information, and so it should be made as reliable, secure, transparent, and relevant as possible. Both sender and recipient should be able to express their ideas honestly to gain trust from each other. The method of communication should be understood by the recipient to make the content understandable and useful. Interprofessional and responsible communication should be emphasized in all sectors. Indeed, the healthcare sector, as a case study, should portray ethical behavior in undertaking its operations. That would ensure that people receive high-quality services.
Review Result of Survey
As a nurse, it is essential that trust is establish with patients, family members, and the interprofessional team. This is achieved through active listening, showing genuineness, and acknowledging patients feelings. When taking care of patients, they want to be in an environment that is safe, they also want to be able to trust the people who are taking care of them. This reduces their hospital anxiety, fear, and it gives them a sense of security. My greatest strength from value in action survey is honesty. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, my patients and my colleagues have told me that I am an honest person. As when they ask me to do something, even with the little amount of time, I always do it as I promised. My colleagues also told me that they like working with me because I get my job done and they do not have to go behind me to double check my work. I believe honesty is built between nurses and patients during care through effective communications and by fulfilling promises.
My conflict management tool is OWL (collaboration). As a future nurse, a good work is always a result of a good team. Therefore effective collaborating in the nursing environment encourages nurses, other healthcare professionals ( HR, management, security, transportation, doctors), patients to operate as a team, to reflect upon, plan for, improve center practice, and provide a positive role for patients and the entire healthcare team. As a future nurse, I believe collaborating with other staff members provide each participant with the opportunity for personal and professional growth. Collaboration also helps patients feel like a part of the community and can help in all areas of self-learning and adaptation. Communication, social, and emotional skill are all strengthen when us as nurses learn to work as a team, which can help improve self-esteem and confidence in patients.
Communication Models and Theories
Nurses play a major role in providing patients with the best care for their well-being. Communication is vital in improving the patients health. Therapeutic communication refers to a collection of styles and techniques that aims at fostering the mental, physical and emotional recovery of a patient. While executing their professional duties, nurses provide their patients with support and appropriate information regarding their health progress while under their care. Nurses and health care providers use therapeutic communication to question and offer information to their patients through various techniques and styles. Open-minded statements, questioning, use silence and repeat information that helps the patients to walk through their problems.
Various techniques of therapeutic communication exist to help nurses incorporate into their healthcare practice. One major style is the use of silence. Not all situations require talking; some situations require individuals to keep quiet. Keeping silent deliberately helps both the nurses and the patients to think about the healing process and the next steps necessary to foster recovery. It also helps patients to take time and space and meditate about a new topic as well as all that has happened. Therefore, it is paramount that nurses give their patients some space and time through a silent moment. Acceptance is another technique used in therapeutic communication. In healthcare provision, nurses need to allow their patients to develop a sense of acceptance and a feeling of being heard through therapeutic communication. In this case, acceptance is not agreement; making eye contact with the patient and assuring them that you’ve heard and understood their feeling is vital. A patient will be receptive if she or he feels that the caregiver understands what they undergo. Other techniques include recognition, restating, focusing, and offering self and active listening, among other styles.
Barriers to therapeutic communication
Even though therapeutic communication is useful in improving patient health, it faces several barriers in its execution. A significant barrier is that therapeutic communication comes along with work overload to nurses. It requires nurses to work extra hard when taking care of the patients because not only do they ensure that the patients keep their medical requirements updated but also requires the nurses to spend more time with the patients. Another nurse related barrier is a shortage of nurses to offer therapeutic communication to the patients. When there are fewer nurses, there is an increased workload which indicates that there will be no extra time for nurses to offer therapeutic services to the patients. On the part of patients, some patients exhibit a negative relationship with nurses through their perceptions and hence makes the nurses to be fatigues and overwhelmed in attempts to offer therapeutic services to the patients. More so, therapeutic communication has faced hindrances due to patient anxiety, pain, as well as physical discomfort they face during their times in hospitals.
Assertive and non-assertive communication styles
Communication can be explained through three basic styles. Assertive, aggressive and non-assertive are the three styles of communication nurses use towards their patients. Non-assertive communication style is the opposite of aggressive behaviour. Non-assertive individuals always wish to be seen as more important. They desire to be accepted and to be liked by those around them and, desire to be chosen all the time. In general, non-assertive persons feel beneficial since the payoffs are not meant to hurt or make someone mad. Assertive communication is considered as the healthiest type of communication among individuals. This is because it offers a sincere feeling that does not judge someone but offers support to those around. In most cases, assertive people are perceived as mature, classy and well-natured. When conversing with someone who is assertive, you will notice that they look straight into your eyes, talk when comfortable and uses polite phrases such as ‘I think,’ and ‘I feel.’ Assertive communication technique permits nurses to firmly advocate for patients rights and needs without violating others. An assertive nurse must develop self-confident and organized. He or she must always maintain eye contact, use clear, concise speech, speak firmly and positively when communicating with team members or patients. Speaks genuinely, without irony, and take initiative to guide situations.
Communication models and theories
FOCUS model of communication is essential in therapeutic communication. It entails five essential steps that help nurses to find problems affecting their patients as well as resolving them. The nurse finds a problem starting from the simplest problem to the more complex one. After finding the problem, the nurses or managers will then organize the team members to deal with the problem thereof. After that, clarifying the problem will be essential. A problem cannot be solved before clarifying it. This will entail breaking the problem into smaller units for easier understanding of the same. After understanding the problem, the team members can offer a solution to the prevailing issue. FOCUS is the best model to integrate into my future nursing practice or when taking care of family members or any other sick persons. The steps aligned alongside the general practice under FOCUS help one to identify the problem and offer a concrete solution because of teamwork. It also fosters interpersonal communication between nurses and patients, which is vital in quality care provision and positive patient outcomes among the patients.
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is an important aspect as it facilitates interacting well with the clients. EI is the ability to comprehend and effectively manage personal emotions and those of people close or around you. Individuals who showcase a high degree of emotional intelligence understand what they feel, the meaning of those feelings, and how the effect of these feelings on other people. Emotional intelligence comprises of four domains examined as follows.
My Mind Tools survey revealed that I am emotionally intelligent person, have a great relationship with people, and people always approach me for advices. I establish trust with my patients by developing effective communication such as, allowing my patients to express their emotions and concerns. I show empathy by listening without interruptions and by also agreeing with them. I was not surprised by the outcome of survey, because it accurately described my emotional characteristics. I will use the result to focus on the negative part, where I need improvement for the advancement of myself and my patients.
Self-Awareness
Self-awareness enables nurse to be aware of their personal feelings, emotions, and how the actions taken affects other people. Self-awareness is essential for nursing practitioners to have a clear picture of personal weaknesses and strengths. It also helps to cultivate humility. As a nurse it is necessary to be conscious of oneself because the psychological state impacts the way patients information is examined. The practice of personal self-examination adds element to the nurse patient relationship and is applicable to understanding client reactions, hence allowing the nurse to explore these concerns with their patient. My mindtool survey revealed that I have a high emotional intelligence as I have a good rapport with people, and people always approach me for advices. I was not surprise by the mindtool survey result because as a patient care technician, I have developed confidence through communicating with patients and their families, and my colleagues. I intend to improve my weaknesses through meditations and constructive critics from friends and colleagues.
Self-Management
Self-management entails having a calm attitude towards adversity situations. It encourages effectively managing emotions and avoiding making irrational decisions. As a nurse, being in control of a situation and avoid compromising values is crucial to interacting well with patients. As a dedicated nurse, to establish a good relationship with client, you must develop self-control, flexibility, honesty, attentiveness, and creativity as the key to good self-management.
Social Awareness
This is concerned with the ability of a nurse to observe, identify, and understand the needs, emotions, and feelings of patients. It can also entail being able to socially feel comfortable, recognize group dynamics, and identify emotional cues. In other words, this represents empathy, which is a crucial skill in handling the needs of clients. Social awareness is an important El that is required during communications with the patients and family members. This will allow the nurse to understand patients emotional and physical needs, and by recognizing these needs, the nurse is able to take necessary actions and follow-up accordingly.
Relationship Management
This is concerned with developing and maintaining good relations with others, being able to relay messages vividly, inspiring, and influencing others. Relationship management comes in handy for a nurse whenever conflict resolution is needed. The results of my mindtool survey revealed that I have great relationships with others, and I am approachable by others for advice. I acknowledge other peoples emotion by active listening without interruptions. Caution is needed, however, to avoid losing sight of personal needs to fulfill the needs of others. A low emotional intelligence score implies that there is a need for a person to work on improving the emotional intelligence to avert chances of being overwhelmed by emotions, especially in tensed situations. To enhance my self-awareness as a nurse, I have learned that slowing down when faced with strong emotions or anger can aid in self-examination. This will help me to avoid making rushed decisions or overreacting when faced with a situation. Also, understanding my strong values will come in handy to improve self-management. Also, learning body language is crucial in putting myself in someone elses situation and experience what they are going through. Developing social skills, especially on conflict resolution, will help in improving relationship management.
Cultural Competence
Is concerned with the ability to use personal will and action to establish an understanding with people by respecting cultural diversities and promoting equality. Cultural competence is an ideal skill as it helps to have an awareness of the existing cultural difference and, therefore, develop positive attitudes towards different perspectives. Having cultural competence will aid in developing skills for communicating with clients drawn from different cultural backgrounds and meets their needs. It is also a rich source of knowledge on different cultures and beliefs.
Culture
Nursing practice has embraced cultural integration to ensure that clients needs are effectively addressed regardless of their backgrounds. The transcultural frameworks have been developed for assessing and predicting public health outcomes. The Culturally Competent Community Care [CCCC] model provides different dimensions that can be used to understand the healthcare environment (Riley, 2015, p.56). The model helps nurses to develop cultural competence in meeting healthcare needs for diverse people. Culture involves different components such as dominant language, cultural communication, temporal relationship, and name format. All these aspects are crucial for a nurse to ensure that they can interact and communicate with clients easily.
Ethnicity
Ethnicity describes the values, beliefs, and practices of a group. This may include ideas on religion, traditions, and shared language. As a nurse, understanding different beliefs and practices for people with ethnic differences helps to provide quality healthcare services effectively.
Ethnocentrism
This is s a common communication barrier where someone perceives a cultural practice to be superior to others. Thus, a nurse might have difficulties in relating to clients who he feels their cultural beliefs are of less value. This means that communication becomes counterproductive or unproductive, hindering the delivery of the appropriate care service. However, it is not ethnocentrism nor inherent and can be a result of encountering a situation. Thus, it can be easily managed and overcome significantly, and improving the provision of healthcare services.
As a nurse, the ability to possess emotional intelligence provides me with an opportunity to easily communicate and interact with the clients by understanding their emotions and how to manage them. Emotional competence has become an essential aspect of the nursing practice, especially where cultural differences are apparent. A nurse should be able to know and understand cultural values and beliefs to easily interact with the clients by overcoming the challenge of cultural diversity and communication barriers.
