Organizations today recognize the need to cultivate and retain successful leaders. Some organizations choose to bring in and train new leaders, while others seek out those with a significant amount of experience. A leader sharpening his/her leadership skills is much like professional growth. No matter how experienced you are at something, you can always get better. Leaders need constant improvement for effectiveness and dealing with unique challenges that emerge from day-to-day. Therefore, a coach needs to have the know-how of training seasoned leaders.
A one-size-fits-all approach to executive leaders cannot be effective
Caprino, leadership and successful coach, explains that coaching should be individualized/unique. She explains, In my view, coaching should absolutely not be a one-size-fits-all approach. She goes on to explain that coaching should go deeper into the trainees unique circumstances as she states, Ive seen that coaching is far more effective when it involves the deeper, inner work of change.Only when coaching and leadership training takes into account and honors — the actual dimensions of the individuals gender, culture, and worldview, can it be truly effective as a pathway for lasting positive change. Challenges of coaching experienced leaders
Some experienced leaders may resist change. Owing to the success they may have as achieved over the years, they may have a blind eye to specific weaknesses they may have, reducing their excellence as leaders. Convincing them otherwise maybe a daunting task that may take time. Secondly, they may think since their leadership strategies have borne fruits, then they do not need coaching in the first place.
Critique of coaching strategies used with experienced leaders.
As earlier stated, using the one-size-fits-all technique leads to ineffective coaching. Surprisingly, this approach is common among most coaches. It is useless as these seasoned leaders have varying challenges and root causes of these challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to identify these unique challenges and their root causes to help them improve their leadership skills. Trying to fix a leaders drawbacks fails. A coach should guide them towards fixing those drawbacks on their own. Using a checklist of questions is also ineffective, but the coaching process should be interactive and conversational (Centerforexecuticecoaching.com, 2020).
