Certain communication skills are essential for a criminal justice practitioner. Besides, every criminal justice practitioner needs to learn them, especially before entering the workplace, to ensure the success of their careers. Some of the effective communication skills that should be employed by a criminal justice practitioner are such as clarity, respect, listen more than you speak, confidence, appropriate body language, empathy, good public speaking skills, and positivity (Communication – a key to human development, n.d.). Clarity is an essential communication skill, which prevents misunderstandings, hence increases the chances of successful relationships, and hence helps to maintain a professional demeanor.
Respecting clients and co-workers in ways such as speaking in an appropriate tone is essential. Besides, it is critical to remember to learn your boundaries and respecting others who are up than you improve ones role in his or her career. Listening more than you speak maintains healthy relationships without overstepping your boundaries. Confidence makes a criminal justice practitioner appear both responsible and confident. Appropriate body language, such as looking at other people directly in their eyes, and firm handshakes are a show of confidence. Empathy shows acknowledgment and concern of other peoples needs and maintains good relationships (Australian National Audit Office, 2006). Positivity, through refraining from being negative, and dismissing anyone elses ideas, is essential to maintain an efficient criminal justice practice.
Communication skills are necessary for the process of policy implementation. Besides, the participation of people is a critical issue in policy implementation, and participation requires communication. Moreover, it enables the planners to identify and formulate development programs so that the required needs are taken into account. Besides, in policy implementation, communication empowers people to recognize essential issues, so that they also find the common grounds for action, and builds a sense of identity, including participation to implement appropriate decisions (Australian National Audit Office, 2006). Communication also enhances improved teamwork and coordination, which offers adequate management of implemented policies.
Communication skills are important for some critical purposes. For example, it enhances the communication of early planning by providing sufficient attention to policy implementation. Moreover, it ensures that the critical success factors for implementation are well identified and then given sufficient attention to ensuring the success of the policy implementation. Communication skills also enhance the exchange of information by the responsible agencies, concerning a master plan and how to make it work. In this manner, the key elements will be identified and understood towards the policy implementation (Australian National Audit Office, 2006). The communication events may include decision-making, scheduling, risk management strategies, procurement, governance, and even management of contracts. The team members also communicate on matters of time, resources, and cost, including the milestones and manageable steps to be observed.

In the course of rehabilitating drug addicts, criminal justice practitioners often face several challenging situations that may hinder their useful service. To effectively solve some of the issues arising from these challenges, criminal justice practitioners must employ ethics-centered and evidence-based analysis of the arising situations to get the best solution to the problems.
Ethics Centered Analysis
In the ethics-centered analysis of tricky situations, criminal justice practitioners are likely to face different issues. Some of these issues include; some canning practitioners taking advantage of the addicts and physically, emotionally, or sexually assault them. Another ethical issue that might bring a complicated situation is the drug abuse amongst the employees within the rehabilitation center, which might make it relatively hard to deliver the required interventions. Confidentiality may also be an issue as information shared may reach an unintended audience, lack of informed consent, and infidelity.
In the situations identified above, it is the practitioners’ prerogative to ensure every employee within the rehabilitation center upholds a high level of ethics to benefit the addicts. In the above cases, the practitioners should not sympathize with their employees for some of these acts, if possible, they should be fired and legal action taken against them. This is because, according to the Beneficence code of ethics, it is the responsibility of the rehabilitation counselors to enhance and improve the welfare of those admitted in their facilities (Landon et al., 2020). additionally, rehabilitation counselors should ensure that the therapy they use does not negatively impact their patients.
Additionally, the rehabilitation center should be stern against any form of discrimination against their clients. Therefore, the officers should be warned against any attempt to discriminate against a patient. In case of such violations, the officers should be charged with infringement and office (Hartley & Cartwright, 2016). The discrimination legislations work closely with impartiality within the institution. Therefore, it is upon the criminal justice practitioners to ensure that they impartial, and everyone is treated justly regardless of their condition. In so doing, this will instill a sense of responsibility and professionalism that will boost the organization’s competence.
In every rehabilitation center, confidentiality is paramount. The kind of information collected in the rehabilitation centers should be treated with the utmost privacy due to their sensitiveness. When it comes to drug addiction, the addict may find themselves revealing personal information or too much information. The practitioners must protect such information as exposing them to the public may result in stigmatization or victimization of the patient is injurious (Hartley & Cartwright, 2016). Criminal justice practitioners or officers found guilty of sharing confidential information to the public should face disciplinary measures or terminate their employment. Additionally, to ensure that the confidentiality clause is not abused in any manner, it is a good practice to ensure that the stakeholders are meant to sign a confidentiality adherence form which will mandatorily make them abide by the confidentiality requirements. The confidentiality adherence form will ensure that information not meant for the public remains confidential.
Code of ethics for the criminal justice and rehabilitation counselors have another clause referred to as fidelity. Fidelity is a requirement that requires officers to remain true to their standards of practice and keep their commitments and promises. From the moment an officer takes in a client, the officers should be well aware that they have entered into a binding contract with the client that lasts as long as they are within their premises and even afterward (Hartley & Cartwright, 2016). Upon signing the agreement, the officers confirm their fidelity to the practice principles and keep their end of the bargain. Therefore, the contract also forces the criminal justice officers or counselors to protect and ensure that the client’s welfare is guarded effectively. Therefore, this will further ensure that the counselors remain true to their service code and ethics.
Evidence-Based Analysis
Evidence-based practice can be described as a situation where the top research evidence with clinical knowhow and patient values. In the evidence-based exercise description, attention is often given research-based knowledge, which implies evidence obtained from experimental studies. Therefore, in the evidence-based approach, the intervention chosen should be based on past experiences that have proved useful in offering solutions to the identified conditions. Considering alcohol and drug addiction, it has existed for the longest time possible. Therefore, different approaches have been utilized and proved to be useful in solving the victims’ challenges. Rather than coming up with new techniques in the rehabilitation centers, it is necessary to adopt some of these approaches to offer solutions to the clients effectively. Some of the standard evidence-based practices that can be applied in the implementation include;
Brief Interventions
The Brief Intervention (BI) approach has been proved effective in helping alcohol addicts. The brief intervention aims to make the culprit aware that continued use of alcohol exposes them to considerable health risks. After this, the victims have advised to device a means to either reduce the intake of alcohol or shun alcohol consumption altogether. Brief intervention sessions usually take up to five minutes, and the session involves advice (Jhanjee, 2017). Nevertheless, the session can also go up to 15 or 30 mins for short counseling. Therefore, in the rehabilitation centers, the rehabilitation officers will be needed to hold counseling sessions with the patients providing them with the necessary information on why it is essential to stop abusing alcohol and other drugs. This method has been termed effective in rehabilitating alcohol addicts and can also be tried on other addictions to determine the effectiveness. Additionally, many practitioners prefer this topic because it is cost-effective as little resources are used after the rehabilitating officers have been effectively trained.
Motivational Interviewing
According to Acuff et al. (2019), Motivational Interviewing (MI) can be described as a psychotherapeutic method that purposes to move a person from being undecided towards getting the motivation to make optimistic decisions achieving particular objectives. The evidence-based approach has been in practice for some time and has proved to be effective. Specific principles guide the MI method. These include; showing empathy through reflective listening, avoiding direct argument or confrontation, adjusting to the clients resistance than directly opposing them, and supporting optimism rather than self-efficacy (Landon et al., 2020). The MI approach is highly effective in a dependent population where most of those in the rehabilitation center fall. The counseling officers will be required to set long interviewing sessions where they will listen and offer solutions to the clients.
In conclusion, the ethical-analysis and evidence-based approaches bring forth a situation where the criminal justice practitioners are conscious of the client and familiar with what the client needs. Through the ethical analysis, criminal practitioners should avoid any issue that may make them culpable to the standards of practice and any issue that may infringe on the clients’ rights. The evidence-based approach offers practical solutions to different problems, more so solutions that have been proven effective. Therefore, the officers should factor in the past experienced to expedite the way forward.

To demonstrate your proficiency in the program learning outcomes, you will develop your selected topic specific to each outcome.
In the Criminal Justice Capstone Project, you will identify and define a problem you feel needs to be addressed within your discipline (emergency management, criminal justice, or homeland security); describe the significance of the problem to serve as the basis for the development of a program, implementation of a new policy, or change to an existing policy; and design an appropriate solution that is specific and measurable for purposes of effectiveness based on the delineated goals and objectives.

Topic Proposal Due in Unit 2
In Unit 2, you will choose your Criminal Justice Capstone Project topic. Your topic selection should be specific, with clear parameters that will enable you to fully address each program learning outcome. You will identify a direction that will enable you to make those connections by sharing preliminary approaches specific to each program learning outcome, connected to your proposed topic.
Topic: Your selection should be a crime problem that is specific, focused, and that can be addressed through a program proposal, policy change proposal, or new policy proposal. Your selection should be based on your current or anticipated career field.
